Qualcomm has confirmed the launch of the next generation flagship mobile processor — the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The chipset will be unveiled during the Snapdragon Summit 2025 on September 23 and will be geared towards the next premium smartphone models.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5: Naming and Roadmap
Qualcomm clarified the meaning behind the ‘Gen 5’ branding. Gen 5 does not refer to a skipped generation — it instead refers to the 5th iteration of the Snapdragon 8 flagship. The previously released chipsets in the series consist of the Snapadrgon 8 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, and Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Elite is Qualcomm’s top mobile platform and the ‘Elite’ badge focuses on performance, efficiency, and advanced AI capabilities.
On-device generative AI is portable and is a smartphone AI in 2025. Changes in the Naming Model: Qualcomm says the rest of the system ensures better understanding for the consumers and OEMs.

Key Expectations
Enhanced Qualcomm Oryon CPU: Major improvements in performance-per-watt architecture and substantial improvements in thermal efficiency.
Next-Level AI Performance: Optimized for on-device generative AI, a growing trend in 2025 smartphones.
Consistency in Naming: Qualcomm says the updated system ensures clarity for consumers and OEMs, making it easier to track upgrades across generations.
Smartphone Launches with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
Xiaomi 17 Series: Already confirmed to employ the new chipset. For some reason, Xiaomi didn’t include the 16 series and went on to 17, probably so it could match with Apple’s iPhone 17 series.
Samsung Galaxy S26 series: Likely to include the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a custom optimised version.
More OEMs: Other flagship smartphone manufacturers are also expected to make partnership announcements in the near future.
Why It Matters
For now, the 8 Elite Gen 5 is the most powerful and the most efficient Qualcomm chip. Its purpose is to directly take on Apple’s anticipated A19 Pro/Ultra, and the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 series. The rise in smartphone AI capability makes the launch pivotal for the flagship performance race in 2026.
