Rashmika Mandanna Viral Video Update: Soon after an AI deepfake video of Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna took the internet by storm, it is grabbing sharp reactions across the tech industry and the government. In the latest update, IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar echoed the obligations that social media platforms have to follow under the IT rules to mitigate misinformation efforts.
According to the post shared on X, formerly called Twitter, platforms owe a legal obligation to stop users from spreading misinformation on the platform "under the IT rules notified in April 2023." He added if such cases are reported by a user or the government, they must be taken down within 36 hours. If the platforms fail to comply with the directions, rule 7 shall apply to take the matter to courts by the aggrieved person.
"PM @narendramodi ji's Govt is committed to ensuring Safety and Trust of all DigitalNagriks using Internet," Chandrasekhar posted. "If platforms do not comply with this, rule 7 will apply and platforms can be taken to court by aggrieved person under provisions of IPC [Indian Penal Code]. Deep fakes are latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and needs to be dealt with by platforms," reposting an Alt News Journalist's (@AbhishekSay) post, Chandrasekhar said.

For the unversed, the original clip is of Zara Patel, a British-Indian social media influencer with over four lakh followers on photo-sharing app Instagram. The video was shared on October 9. While it is difficult to detect that it is a fake video, a close peak reveals abrupt face swapping in the first second of the clip. Earlier, Bollywood celebrity Amitabh Bachchan also shared his response to the AI deepfake video. "Yes this is a strong case for legal," he said.

Deep fakes are media (such as photos and videos) that alter the original person using AI or can swap them with a totally different person. This technology has become a major concern after the proliferation of AI technologies in recent times.
