Red Dead Redemption: This is a point where all Red Dead Redemption fans must be thinking that all this cant really be true. And honestly, no one would blame you. But this one’s real—Dan Houser, the mind behind Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto, has confirmed a brand-new open-world game is in the works.

If you’ve followed Rockstar Games over the years, Houser’s name is one you know well. He co-founded the studio with his brother Sam and was the creative force behind many of its biggest titles. He left Rockstar in 2020, and by 2021, he had launched a new venture—Absurd Ventures.

Unlike Rockstar, Absurd isn’t strictly a game studio. It calls itself an entertainment company, one that aims to build universes across different kinds of media. Last year, we got our first taste of that vision with A Better Paradise, an audio fiction series starring The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln. The series hit #1 on Apple’s fiction chart and told the story of Dr. Mark Tyburn, a psychologist and inventor who creates an AI-driven digital game world. But as these things go, the tech turns dark fast.

That AI world was buried—“dormant and undiscovered … until now.”

Now, the world of A Better Paradise is expanding. Absurd Ventures has just announced a new novel series based on the story. The first book, A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath, arrives on October 14 in print, eBook, and audiobook formats. According to the official press release, it will “go deeper into the origins and secrets of the mysterious video game’s development as told by the tortured souls who are now on the run from the AI entity they played a part in creating and unleashing.”

But here’s the big news: buried in that same announcement was confirmation that “an open world video game set in the A Better Paradise universe is also in development.”

No title. No trailer. No timeline. Still, the idea alone is enough to turn heads. It sounds like the game won’t follow the exact storyline of the podcast or novel, but will instead build something new within that same universe. A spin-off, not a straight adaptation.

And if you’re wondering how far along the game is—well, it’s anyone’s guess. With Houser’s game dev background, it’s easy to imagine something has been brewing since Absurd Ventures opened its doors. But we’ve seen no confirmation that it’s in full production yet.

That said, this could end up being something truly special. At the very least, it “can’t be any worse than MindsEye,” a not-so-subtle jab at the first game from Houser’s fellow Rockstar alum, Leslie Benzies.

The game is still early in development, but given Houser’s track record, A Better Paradise might be worth keeping an eye on—especially if you’re still feeling the absence of Red Dead Redemption.
