Reliance Jio has achieved a major milestone by enabling Voice over New Radio (VoNR) across India on its fully indigenous 5G Standalone (SA) core. The breakthrough was announced by Aayush Bhatnagar, Senior Vice President at Jio, in a LinkedIn post on Saturday, just days after the telco marked its 9th anniversary on September 5.
“Jio has successfully enabled Voice over New Radio (VoNR) across India, leveraging its fully indigenous 5G Standalone (SA) Core and Jio’s own IMS (IP multimedia subsystem)-enhanced VoNR Core,” Bhatnagar said.
What is VoNR and Why It Matters
Low-latency, crystal-clear voice calls are now natively on the 5G SA network with VoNR enabled 5G, this eliminates the need of 4G while calling as VoLTE can now be ditched. This means
- Faster call setup times
- Reduced call drops and voice cuts
- Lower battery consumption for devices
- Consistently high-definition voice quality
According to German telco software vendor ng-voice, VoNR also opens new revenue opportunities for mobile operators by encouraging adoption over OTT voice services such as WhatsApp or Telegram, thanks to the superior quality of service.

A Step Towards Indigenous and Global Ambitions
Bhatnagar highlighted that this rollout cements Jio’s position as a telecom innovator:
- Building a homegrown technology stack, from 5G radios to 5G SA core and VoNR-enabled IMS
- Driving sovereign telecom capabilities with global relevance
- Delivering a future-ready digital experience to its over 500 million subscribers
At Reliance Industries’ recent AGM, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Jio, reaffirmed the company’s global aspirations:
“As we look ahead, Jio’s journey will progress beyond India. Our innovative technologies will now be deployed globally, ready to solve global challenges. With strategic partnerships and a clear roadmap, we will take Jio’s services to the rest of the world, creating value for partners and shareholders alike.”
The Bigger Picture
Jio’s True5G network is powered by its indigenous stack, comprising:
- 5G Core
- OSS/BSS systems
- Small cells
- Other advanced solutions
It seems that Jio is working to strengthen its 5G network, it is working on providing world class connectivity with a fully homegrown ecosystem providing VoNR that is now live pan-India. This marks a significant leap in India’s digitisation journey.
