Roblox has introduced automatic chat translations for users worldwide to allow for better communication with people on the immersive gaming platform. Built on the company's proprietary AI technology, the feature powers real-time translations of chat messages sent in text format across 16 languages. With the help of the feature, users can interact with community members in their preferred language.

Roblox highlighted an example in which a user can send a chat in Korean and a member can read it in English or send the same to someone who views it in German. It can help people overcome language barriers and offer seamless communication in immersive 3D experiences. The company stated in its release that one in three chat messages on Roblox require translation, which implies one-third of users chat with people who do not speak their native language on the same server.

Apart from English, the languages supported for the automatic translation feature include: Chinese - Simplified, Chinese - Traditional, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Polish and Vietnamese. "Our custom large language model is so fast we're able to do real-time translations from any one of 16 languages to any of the others as people type to help them connect in real time, no matter where they're from," Daniel Sturman, CTO Of Roblox said.

"In the future, we envision every part of a user experience on Roblox to be fully translated into their native language, including offering AI-powered voice translation," the Chief Technology Officer added. The company noted as of September 30, more than 70 million users tune into the platform daily. Its users in 180 countries sent 2.4 billion chat messages daily and 904 billion in the past 12 months till Q3 2023.

"As we continue to grow our user base globally, we seek to make Roblox not only easily accessible, but also truly localised, offering everything from local payment options to culturally relevant content, avatars and in-experience content," said Zhen Fang, Head of International at Roblox. Automatic chat translation is now available within all experience that uses TextChatService.
