Samsung’s most experimental foldable yet is finally moving from years of patents and concept demos to an actual product. The Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung’s first commercial triple-folding smartphone, is expected to debut on December 5 — and all signs now point to its launch being right around the corner. A new report confirms that US firmware testing has begun, hinting that Samsung is in the final stage of preparation. With a huge 10-inch main display, a 6.5-inch cover screen and a price that may hover around $3,000, this is shaping up to be Samsung’s boldest foldable hardware push to date. The device is being built as more than a phone — Samsung wants it to feel like a pocket-sized PC.

US Firmware Testing Underway

According to Android Headlines, unlocked firmware testing for the Galaxy Z TriFold has started in the US, with the model number listed as SM-F968U1. What this really means is that Samsung has finally opened up final-stage software to wider internal testing — something it usually starts earlier in the cycle.

Beginning this process so late suggests either a compressed development timeline or extremely tight software control until now. Either way, testing indicates that Samsung is actively preparing the handset for a US rollout.

Samsung reportedly plans to release both carrier-locked and unlocked variants in the region.

Limited Global Availability at First

The initial launch won’t be global. The US may be the only major western market to get the TriFold in the first wave. Outside Korea, Samsung is expected to ship limited units to:

- China

- Taiwan

- Singapore

- UAE

This strategy mirrors Samsung’s cautious approach with first-gen hardware — keep quantities small, prioritise markets with stronger foldable adoption, and refine production.

A Three-Panel Foldable Built Like a Portable PC

The Galaxy Z TriFold will use a dual-hinge structure that folds in two directions. When completely open, you get a large 10-inch tablet-like display. Fold it down, and a 6.5-inch outer screen provides the familiar smartphone experience.

The combination of two hinges, multiple display layers and compact folding makes this one of Samsung’s most technically demanding devices. It’s expected to run a high-end Snapdragon chip — likely one designed to handle heavy multitasking and desktop-class workloads.

Samsung is said to be positioning the TriFold as a portable PC alternative, bridging the gap between a phone, tablet and lightweight laptop.

Battery, Design and Hardware Expectations

A recent leak pointed out a 5,437mAh rated battery, which is noticeably larger than what we see in typical foldables. Each internal panel reportedly measures:

~3.9mm

~4.0mm

~4.2mm

When unfolded, this would make the TriFold slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which sits at 4.2mm open.

Other expected features include:

- 200MP primary camera

- Extremely bright displays, up to 2,600 nits

- Tablet-class UI optimisations

- New hinge engineering for durability

Conclusion

The Galaxy Z TriFold is shaping up to be Samsung’s most ambitious foldable — and potentially the most expensive. With firmware testing now underway in the US and a December 5 debut rumoured, Samsung appears ready to push foldables into a new category. If the hardware matches the leaks, this could be the company’s closest attempt yet at creating a true pocket-sized PC.
