SOUTH Korean giant Samsung has reportedly restricted employees from using generative AI tools. The guideline came after incidents of sensitive data were leaked to ChatGPT when company employees were using it. Bloomberg reported about the matter in its report.
The data processed by these AI tools is positioned on external storage points. It is one of the concerns of Samsung, as per the report. However, the ban is temporary and limited to company devices such as computers, mobiles, tablets and gadgets operating on internal networks, as per TechCrunch.
What did the Memo say?
"HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees' productivity and efficiency. However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily restricting the use of generative AI," CNET, citing the memo, reported.
"We ask that you diligently adhere to our security guideline and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment," Samsung said.
AI pose a security threat
As per the results of an internal survey conducted by Samsung in April, 65 per cent of respondents nodded that using generative AI poses a security risk. Plus, the company is also working on its own AI engine to accomplish tasks that AI services such as ChatGPT and Bard are capable of doing.
Are customers affected?
Meanwhile, Samsung devices owned by customers remain unaffected by these guidelines. You can continue to use generative AI tools if you own a Samsung product.
Rise of AI
Generative AI became the talk of the town with the announcement of OpenAI's ChatGPT. After it started witnessing eyeballs across the globe, big tech companies introduced their AI-laden products and integrated the technology into their traditional offerings. To stay relevant, Google introduced Bard. Microsoft's AI-powered Bing is already live for users. Plus, the tech giant has integrated AI into its widely popular Microsoft Office.
Meanwhile, this is not one of its kind crackdown on AI tools. Italy earlier banned the service for violation of user privacy in the past. However, the ban got lifted recently.
