JE Technology Desk: Music Streaming app Spotify plans to add full-length music videos to its interface, which could make it a direct rival to widely famous TikTok and YouTube, citing sources, Bloomberg reported. We speculate it could be similar to what Google's YouTube Music offers in its app besides audio playback.
In the current scheme, the company already allow song artists to upload a Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) that plays in the loop while an audio track is playing, according to Reuters. The audio app already has over 1 lakh video podcasts and is in talks with partners about the new integration, the report claims.
With the move, the company aims to draw more Gen Z users to its app from YouTube and the short-form video app TikTok, which is banned in India. Google's service already has an audio streaming alternative to Spotify in the form of YouTube Music. Besides audio, it can also stream videos of songs sourced from the video-streaming app.
Spotify recently announced that it would slice 200 jobs from its podcast division in its second layoffs round to restructure the company after years of heavy investment.
In another update about the app, the company also introduced a revamped experience for desktop users on Spotify with a three-column design. It is also reportedly working on a 'Supremium' tier subscription that may offer high-fidelity audio to listeners.
According to the 'About' section of Spotify, the app is home to more than 100 million tracks and over five million podcasts available for free. Users who wish to gain access to exclusive features such as offline listening, better sound quality and ad-free experience can invest in the Premium tier. As per the description, it is the "world's most popular audio streaming subscription service", with around 515 million users in over 180 countries.
