Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, is officially poised to launch in India. As per reports, the company has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), allowing it to start rollout preparations. This brings high-speed satellite internet one step closer to millions across the country, especially in underserved rural areas.
What is Starlink, and How Does It Work?
What is Starlink, and How Does It Work? Musk’s SpaceX operates Starlink, which provides internet using a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. These satellites are positioned closer to earth compared to traditional geostationary satellites, which enables:
Lower latency
Faster internet speeds
Wider coverage, even in remote locations
Currently, Starlink is operating in over 100 countries, and its entry into India could prove to be a game-changer for internet access in rural areas.
Starlink Plans and Expected Pricing in India
Starlink Plans and Expected Pricing in India Reports indicate that Starlink could provide promotional unlimited data plans for under $10 a month (approximately ₹840) to attract early adopters.
Here’s what we know so far:
Urban pricing recommendation (TRAI): ₹500/month
Annual satellite spectrum fee: ₹3,500 per MHz
License fee: 8% of adjusted gross revenue (AGR)
These pricing models are still under regulatory discussion, but Starlink is expected to stay competitive.
Starlink Hardware Costs and Internet Speeds
Although India pricing for hardware isn’t confirmed, here’s a reference from the US:
Standard Starlink Kit: $349 (~₹30,000)
Starlink Mini: $599 (~₹43,000)
Expected internet speeds in India:
25 Mbps to 220 Mbps, depending on location and satellite coverage.
When Will Starlink Launch in India?
Starlink has received the LoI from the DoT, but is still waiting on the final clearance from IN-SPACe. Final approvals may permit them to launch around late 2025 early 2026.
Why Starlink Matters for India
Starlink's affordable pricing and strong network infrastructure could transform internet access in digitally backward regions in India turning services like online education, e-health and even digital banking widely available.
