Windows 11: There is some bad news for Microsoft Windows 10 users, as Microsoft has just recently announced that it will end support for Microsoft Office apps on devices still operating on the Windows 10 operating system after it reaches its end of support on October 14, 2025. Users will now need to upgrade to the latest Windows 11 in order to continue their usage of Microsoft 365 apps if they don't wish to encounter any potential issues, Microsoft stated.
This announcement also impacts standalone Office versions like Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016. These versions will no longer receive updates or technical support on Windows 10 devices.
Although the apps will continue to work after the support ends, Microsoft has warned users about possible performance and reliability issues. The company strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11 to ensure smoother performance and avoid these issues in the future, as noted in their official support guide.
Why aren’t the Users Upgrading to Windows 11?
One of the key reasons why users are a bit hesitant to migrate to Windows 11 is its strict requirement of hardware, in particular the need for TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0. The feature, as Microsoft claims, enhances security against cyberattacks and has been made compulsory for Windows 11 installation. Many users who have found it difficult to install it due to older hardware have created workarounds to bypass it.
Given the challenges, Microsoft is providing some flexibility for users who are either unable or prefer not to upgrade. Home users can extend their use of Windows 10 for another year by purchasing Extended Security Updates (ESU) for $30. Additionally, specific enterprise and specialized systems, such as those running Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) editions, will continue receiving updates past the October 2025 deadline.
What Does it Mean for Windows 10 Users?
The users can still keep using their Windows 10 systems and Office apps even after the support ends, but the drawback is the end of security updates, increasing the risks of being exposed to potential harm. Microsoft has also stated that the free upgrade to Windows 11 is available, users just need to meet the minimum system requirements.
Margaret Farmer, a Microsoft spokesperson, highlighted the importance of this step: "You must ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for the update," she said.
Deadline is Close
As the deadline comes closer millions of users are still using the Windows 10 OS. While the operating system still maintains its popularity, Microsoft’s stance of cutting off support for Office apps adds another incentive for users to transition to the latest Windows. For those who depend on Microsoft 365 or other Office products, the need to upgrade sooner rather than later is becoming more and more urgent.
