Telegram Alternatives: Amid reports that the Indian government is investigating the use of Telegram in criminal activities, several users fear that the app may get banned in India if the findings do not turn in favour of the platform. This may allow people to explore alternatives to continue texting and communication. If you are among these users, here are the five options that you can try out as a Telegram alternative.
Telegram Alternatives: Top Five Apps
WhatsApp Messenger: Meta's free messaging and calling application has a user base of more than two billion people in over 180 countries. The personal messages on the app are end-to-end encrypted and users can log in via their mobile number. It supports high-quality voice and video calling, group chat features and more.
Signal Private Messenger: The free-to-use app prioritises end-to-end encryption for private chats. Users can send texts, voice notes, images, videos, and other files via the internet. Plus, it supports voice and video calling features and group chats with up to 1,000 users.
Messenger: The all-in-one communication platform offers unlimited text, voice and video calling, group chat and file-sharing features. As for other options, it offers chat themes, Watch Together and custom reactions among other features.
LINE: The calls and messages app allows users to communicate for free via features such as text messages, voice and video calls and more. It also offers features such as LINE stickers, emojis, themes and more. For security and privacy, it ships with Letter Sealing encryption.
Zangi Private Messenger: The messenger app offers anonymous registration and end-to-end encryption for text, voice and video calls and files. It can also function with 2G or poor Wi-Fi signals, as per the Play Store description of the app. Further, it does not collect data and all the information is stored on the device, the description added.
For context, the news of India's investigation into the messaging platform came after the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France over the app's moderation efforts. Coming to India, the investigations reportedly concern criminal activities such as extortion and gambling. "The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) (under MHA) and MeitY have been looking into P2P communications on Telegram," citing a government official, Moneycontrol reported.
