New Delhi | Jagran Tech Desk: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has shared some pictures of the Moon's surface captured by the Terrain Mapping camera mounted on Chandrayaan 2.

ISRO shared its photos on Twitter. The pictures were captured on August 23 and show craters such as Mitra, Korolev, Mach and Jackson. The lunar surface was captured at an altitude of 4375 km.

“Lunar surface imaged by Terrain Mapping Camera-2(TMC-2) of #Chandrayaan2 on August 23 at an altitude of about 4,375 km showing craters such as Jackson, Mach, Korolev and Mitra (In the name of Prof. Sisir Kumar Mitra),” ISRO wrote on Twitter and shared the picture.

Jackson crater is located in the northern hemisphere on the far side of the moon. Mitra crater named after Prof. Sisir Kumar Mitra. He was an Indian physicist who received Padma Bhushan for his work in the field of ionosphere and Radiophysics. Korolev crater consists of several small craters of varying sizes.

The images also show lunar north pole, including Rozhdestvensky, Plaskett, Sommerfeld, Hermite and Kirkwood craters.

ISRO has also shared a picture of mare Orientale basin and Apollo craters.

The spacecraft had arrived on the lunar orbit on August 19 and it is conducting a series of maneuvers to reach the south pole of the Moon's surface. Lander portion- Vikram of the craft is expected to land on the south pole on September 7.

Chandrayaan 2 has already completed two maneuvers and is scheduled to completed third on August 28 at around 6 am. If the maneuver is successful, then India will become the fourth country to achieve the feat after the Soviet Union, US and China.
