Kshitij Zodape, a 26-year-old developer from Mumbai, shared his experience with Jagran Hi-Tech, detailing how his Apple Watch Ultra saved him from a perilous situation during a dive in poor visibility conditions. While diving with his instructor, Kshitij’s weight belt unexpectedly detached, causing a rapid, uncontrolled ascent—one of the most dangerous scenarios for divers. While diving with my instructor in reduced visibility, my weight belt suddenly released, triggering an instantaneous and perilously fast rise," he recounted.

Prompt Alerts from the Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra, meant for explorers and activity freaks, promptly gave a prompt to "slow down." When Kshitij's rise was not checked, the watch began its emergency siren, a shrill, high-pitched sound alert audible up to 180 meters away. "The Watch Ultra cautioned me to 'slow down' instantly. When the climb went on unabated, it started sounding its emergency siren. My instructor, who was in front of me, heard the clear sound underwater and returned fast, and halted the rapid climb just in time," said Kshitij.

How the Emergency Siren Works

The siren switches between two distinct frequencies to ensure maximum alertness and keeps sounding until manually turned off or the device battery depletes. It only stops for calls or for system alarms and returns to the loud volume it had before after the watch has dried, a crucial point in wet conditions.

Preventing Serious Injury and Collision

Due to this automated action, Kshitij escaped what could have been life-threatening conditions like Decompression Sickness, lung overexpansion, or surface boat collisions in the crowded waters. In recollection of the accident, he had this to say, "I am deeply thankful for the engineering and commitment to safety behind Apple Watch Ultra. Thank you for producing a product that performs perfectly when it really counts. I am deeply thankful to be alive today because of it."
