Threads: Meta’s microblogging platform Threads is taking a big step forward—direct messaging (DM) is finally being tested within the app. This means users will soon be able to chat directly without being pushed to Instagram.

DMs Are Coming to Threads

In a recent post on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that DMs are officially in the testing phase. “We’re starting to test DMs on Threads. If you get access to this — slide through!” he wrote. Following up, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri acknowledged that DMs have been “a top request” since Threads launched.

Until now, the only way for users to engage privately was by sharing a post through Instagram via the “Send on Instagram” option. Otherwise, communication was limited to public comments on posts. That’s about to change.

Initial Rollout in Select Regions

According to The Verge, the first countries getting access to this new DM feature include Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. Meta plans to roll out the feature to additional markets in the near future.

What the New DMs Will Look Like

Users in test regions will see a new envelope icon on the bottom taskbar of the Threads app (on both Android and iOS). On the web, this same DM icon will appear in the left sidebar. Tapping it opens a dedicated inbox, which will be separate from Instagram's direct messages—a notable shift from Meta’s earlier hints about possibly syncing DM systems across the two platforms.

Mosseri added, “Our mission is to foster an open exchange of perspectives, and we know how important messaging is to supporting that cause.”

Bigger Picture: Threads Is Evolving

This update follows Meta’s ongoing efforts to position Threads as a true standalone platform. It also builds on recent advertising initiatives, where Meta introduced new ad formats designed to appear between user posts, featuring clickable action buttons to drive traffic to brand websites.

DMs on Threads could signal a shift in Meta’s strategy—prioritizing in-app communication over cross-platform syncing and giving Threads a stronger identity of its own. If the early tests go well, expect a broader rollout soon.
