YouTube, a popular video streaming platform, has grabbed eyeballs at regular intervals to test new AI features and announce upcoming ones. At the Google I/O 2024, the tech giant said it would bring Veo's (Google's video generation model) capability to YouTube Shorts. Plus, the company has already tested features like 'Ask' and 'Topics' in the past.

Beyond these, the company plans to introduce features that can reimagine videos via prompts and edit or remix existing videos in the future. With this preliminary data, here are the top headline-making AI-powered features the company may bring to YouTube.

Veo For YouTube Shorts: Google announced Veo, its AI-powered video generation model, can generate 1080p videos of over one minute. While it is already available for testing in VideoFX, YouTube Shorts will also get Veo-powered features, Google said. The company also showcased its AI generation tool, Music AI Sandbox, for instrumental music generation.

Dream Screen: In a September 2023 blog post, the company stated it will experiment with Dream Screen. This feature will let people create video and image backgrounds using generative AI for Shorts by entering an idea in a prompt. YouTube said it will release the feature broadly this year.

'Ask' AI Tool: YouTube experimented with an 'Ask' button last month (with Premium users in the US) to let testers ask questions about an eligible video from AI. This allowed users to get information and responses to their questions about a video without pausing the clip.

AI Tools In YouTube Studio: The company will use generative AI to tap into video ideas and frame outlines for creators. These will be personalised based on a user's audience. While the company noted it is testing the feature, it did not share a clear release timeline.

Assistive Search: YouTube will also use AI to help creators find soundtracks for their videos. It will work after creators enter a description of their content. The AI will suggest the "right music at the right price".

Aloud: With Aloud, creators will enjoy some ease while dubbing content across languages. It will help increase the accessibility of videos and reduce dependence on professional resource-intensive dubbing tools.

AI Quizzes: At Google I/O 2024, the company introduced AI-powered quizzes. This tool will allow viewers to raise a hand virtually while watching videos. According to TechCrunch, the feature will use Gemini and roll out to select Android users in the US.

Comments Summarisation: According to a YouTube Help announcement in November 2023, the company was experimenting with an AI feature to organise " large comment sections of long-form videos into easily digestible themes" via the 'Topics' tab. This space was based on public comments to help creators assess the ongoing discussions in the section.
