iPhone 17 Air News: The internet is buzzing with speculation about Apple's next big innovation—the iPhone 17 Air. If rumours hold true, Apple is set to introduce an ultra-slim version of its flagship smartphone, marking a major design evolution. Tech enthusiasts suggest that the iPhone 17 Air will debut alongside the iPhone 17 series this September, boasting a sleeker, lighter form factor.

Apart from being the slimmest iPhone yet, the iPhone 17 Air might also be completely portless. Reports suggest that Apple is considering eliminating physical charging ports, relying solely on wireless charging and data transfer. However, the tech giant has reportedly been cautious about this move, given the European Union's legislation mandating USB-C ports on all electronic devices.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the EU has confirmed that having no ports on a mobile phone is "completely legal". "I’ve had confirmation from the bloc that dropping the USB-C port for a completely portless phone would be completely legal," 9to5Mac's Ben Lovejoy said.

Federica Miccoli, an EU press officer, has confirmed that a portless iPhone will be compliant with the legislation. Miccoli said, "Since such radio equipment cannot be recharged via wired charging, it does not need to incorporate the harmonized (wired) charging solution," as quoted by 9to5Mac.

EU forced companies to bring USB-C for charging as a compulsion. However, this mandate is only for the devices that have wired charging. So if a device doesn’t have a port at all it is not necessary to add a USB-C port.

EU’s Take on Type-C

EU’s step was to focus on standardising charging for all rechargeable devices that we see around us. However, it became a challenge for Apple as they have been giving Lightning port for a long time now. So because of EU’s regulation Apple had to force Type-C port in their iPhone 15-series.

Standard Wireless Charging

The Qi2 charging which is backwards compatible with Qi wireless charging is expected to become a standard wireless charging. Qi2 is inspired by Apple’s MagSafe charging and will likely be a standard charging solution for fully wireless future devices.

So this year might not be it, but there is a big possibility that we will see a portless iPhone from Apple soon.
