WhatsApp Backup: The Meta-owned instant messaging platform which was offering unlimited backup, which was announced back in 2015 for Android users is now coming to an end. Google and WhatsApp have confirmed that the app users will not be getting the unlimited backup option.
Taking to an official post, both Google and WhatsApp have confirmed that the unlimited backup is ending soon and the users will only get 15 GB of backup which they will share with Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.
According to Google, “WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as you have available space within your Google Account storage. If you hit your storage limit, you’ll need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you do not need.”
The tech giant has also stated that Google Workspace membership holders will be unaffected. Furthermore, it is worth noting that WhatsApp offers seamless chat transfer and users will not require support for Google Drive, which may be handy as Google is now restricting Drive capacity.
Google may start putting a limit on WhatsApp by December with its upcoming Beta updates and it will come public in the initial weeks of 2024. If you want to get enhanced storage capacity, users can also opt-in for the Google One subscription.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is working on a slew of new features including the Secret Code for Locked Chats, view counts for Channels, Message Search by Date, Sticker Sharing on Channels, Username selection and better text formatting options.
The Admins of the Channels will also get options to share animated stickers with the channels in order to attract a variety of users.
