WhatsApp, an instant messaging application, tests new features across platforms at regular intervals. In the latest move to improve a user's video calling experience on Android, the company is testing AR features for call effects and filters, according to WABetaInfo. The feature is reportedly undergoing testing in the Android beta '2.24.16.7' version and is expected to be available to more users in future.

According to the report, the company was spotted working on the feature in June on the Android platform. The enhancements will enable users to personalise the video calling experience with dynamic facial filters and call effects. While it is not available for all users, WhatsApp users must ensure their app remains updated to the latest version via the Google Play Store.

As per the screengrab shared by the WhatsApp tracker, the feature can bring fun and interactive elements to live video calls. Users can enable dynamic facial filters, including a touch-up tool for skin smoothing and a low-light mode for better calling in dim lighting conditions. The feature also includes a background editing tool. It can help customise the surroundings behind the user or blur the backdrop.

The background editing tool may also offer a few default choices. The news tracker speculates the arrival of this feature on desktops as PCs offer bigger screen estate and more usability for professionals. In the screengrab shared in the report, a human face icon (likely for face editing), a bulb icon (to activate low light mode) and a Magic wand icon are visible.

The typical icon to switch cameras is also present within the UI. At the bottom, three options (Effects, Background and Effects) may be available. Meanwhile, the company is also working on a status resharing feature which will allow the mentioned contacts to repost the status of the uploader. You can read more on this here.
