If you have WhatsApp on your iPhone or Mac, you need to update your app now. India’s national cybersecurity agency Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has reportedly issued a significant security advisory to the public, highlighting a vulnerability that puts the sensitive personal data of users at risk.
What’s the Issue?
In the most recent vulnerability note (CIVN-2025-0200), CERT-In specifies that the vulnerability impacts:
- WhatsApp for iOS – versions prior to 2.25.21.73
- WhatsApp Business for iOS – version 2.25.21.78
- WhatsApp for Mac – version 2.25.21.78
The issue stems from the improper handling of synchronised messages on linked devices. This loophole could allow attackers to:
- Bypass authorisation controls
- Trigger content processing from arbitrary URLs on a victim’s device
- Gain unauthorised access to user data
- Potentially steal sensitive information
A Bigger Risk With Apple Flaw
It further points out that in a few instances, the vulnerability in WhatsApp has been used along with a native appleOS vulnerability (CVE-2025-43300).
The two weaknesses potentially could be used in combined advanced targeted attacks, consequently posing a great risk for specific high-profile targets.
WhatsApp’s Response
Meta and WhatsApp have yet to comment publicly. But the company has a track record of releasing security sleuths after such vulnerabilities are reported.
How to Stay Safe
To protect yourself, CERT-In recommends:
- Update immediately to the latest version of WhatsApp on iOS and Mac.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or messages until patches are confirmed.
- Stay alert to official updates from WhatsApp regarding security fixes.
Upcoming Feature: Close Friends for Status
Curiously also, while WhatsApp is working on patching vulnerabilities, it is simultaneously reported to be testing a ‘Close Friends’ feature for Status updates. Like Instagram’s version, your stories can be shared with a specific list of chosen contacts that you trust – so you’ll have a little bit more control over who you’re sharing your snaps with.

Final Takeaway
The latest security warning serves as a reminder that even the most popular apps cannot be considered completely immune to vulnerabilities— and how important it is that businesses test the apps before they deploy them. In order to protect your personal information, please:
- Keep apps updated
- Be cautious of unknown links
- Follow cybersecurity advisories
In the connected world of today, protecting that digital self is as essential as our physical selves — and making sure WhatsApp is up to date is the first step.
