ChatGPT has quickly grown into a daily tool for millions—used for writing, brainstorming, and problem-solving. As the fastest-growing software ever, its success has raised one big question: will OpenAI eventually add ads to the platform?
Subscriptions Stay at the Core
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, told The Verge that ads aren’t part of the plan right now. Instead, the company is doubling down on its subscription model, which has already proven sustainable. Paid tiers originally helped manage server loads, but over time they’ve become the foundation of ChatGPT’s business. Turley added that new subscribers are showing the same loyalty as early adopters—a rare sign of long-term stability.

User Trust Comes First
While OpenAI hasn’t ruled out ads completely, Turley was clear: any form of monetisation must not compromise user trust. Pop-up ads or sponsored answers would risk undermining the platform’s credibility, which depends on delivering neutral, helpful responses.
Referrals Over Traditional Ads
Instead of ads, OpenAI is exploring referral-based commerce. ChatGPT could recommend products and take a small share from purchases—functioning more like a smart shopping assistant than an advertising space. This approach keeps interactions useful while still generating revenue.

Competition Is Watching
Meanwhile, Google is reportedly developing its own ad-injection system for AI tools. Given its dominance in online advertising, Google may become the first to push AI-driven ad placements. Whether OpenAI follows that path, however, remains uncertain.
