Microsoft will cease broadcasting over-the-air security updates for Windows 10 devices Oct. 14, 2025. Once this deadline expires users will either have to upgrade to Windows 11 and abide by unsupported or continue using Windows 10 without being eligible for the latest security updates which makes them vulnerable.

Microsoft provides an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program which will cover security updates until 2026; however, most people should upgrade to Windows 11.

Method 1: Upgrade via Windows Update

- Open Settings: Click on Start, and then click"Settings." > " Update & Security > Windows Update. You can also click the Windows Update shortcut.

- Check for Updates: Select Check for updates. If a Windows 10 update is available, install it and restart your PC.

- How to install Windows 11: Once your computer is ready, you’ll see the Window 11 upgrade in Windows Update. Tap Download and install.

- Accept Licence Terms: If asked whether you accept the licence prompts, click Accept and install.

- Reboot: Your PC will restart several times during installation. When it’s done, sign into Windows 11.

Method 2: Using Windows 11 Installation Assistant

- Open Microsoft’s Installation Assistant app.

- Tap Install Windows 11.

- Click Accept and install.

The procedure of the update will be similar to that of the Windows Update method.

Method 3: Using Installation Media (Bootable USB)

Getting Windows installation media (Bootable USB)

- Create a bootable USB drive with Windows 11 on it.

- Plug it into the computer or device you are looking to upgrade.

- Run setup.exe when prompted.

- Continue pressing OK and follow the screen prompts to get to the Ready-to-Install page.

- Decide whether to keep existing files and apps or start over.

- Sign in after the reboot to finish installation.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) Option

If you want to remain on Windows 10, the Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 (ESU) offer security updates until 2026.

As Windows 10 support expires, upgrading to Windows 11 is your best bet. There are various methods of upgrading available such as Windows Update, Installation Assistant or bootable USB drives. This gives you options depending on your convenience.
