Microsoft is adjusting the duration of System Restore points last in Windows 11. As Windows Latest reported, it's a little strange that Microsoft decided to place a new restriction on restore points with the latest KB5060842 update.
“After installing the June 2025 Windows security update, Windows 11, version 24H2 will retain system restore points for up to 60 days. Restore points older than 60 days are not available.”
This change will also apply to all subsequent releases of Windows 11, version 24H2.

How Long Did Restore Points Last Before?
In principle, restore points were intended to last up to ninety days; however, this duration tended to vary wildly:
- For some users, the periods granted were extended as long as ninety days,
- While others saw them shorten to ten based on available space on disk, activity on the system and various internal heuristics.
Thus, your experience may determine whether the new 60-day expiration policy will shorten or slightly lengthen the lifespan of your restore points. Regardless of this scenario, the aim behind the change is to improve the consistency with which these recovery points are retained.
Why Restore Points Matter
For those unaware, System Restore is a Windows feature that allows rollback to a previously stable state—soft reverting Windows systems to a favourable prior version and is most helpful during:
- Significant driver updates or Windows updates
- Installation of dubious trust-level applications
- System settings changes
A considerable number of advanced users suggest manually enabling system restore—it is often not active by default—as it can save you from severe issues such as mid-operation crashes, boot loops, and runaway drivers.
Final Thoughts
Even if it mildly narrows the timeframe, Microsoft's movement towards all-encompassing 60-day life for restore points in Windows 11 version 24H2 increases predictability. For those that have not done so yet, ensure System Restore is active within your device—it can be invaluable when unfortunate scenarios arise.
