Elon Musk-owned company X is manually going through some users' direct messages (DMs) in order to look into complaints of service abuse and infractions, "or to comply with laws or governmental requests.”
This came after a user shared a screenshot asking Elon Musk about ‘What happened to encrypted DMs’ by sharing a screenshot. It stated, “X systems scan shared links and media for spam. Abuse, and prohibited content. We also analyse usage patterns to detect suspicious behaviour and improve your experience. We may manually review DMs to investigate reported violations and misuse of our service, or to comply with laws or governmental requests. See our Privacy Policy for more details.”
The tech giant failed to clearly respond to a question posed by an X user with a @kimdotcom account on Monday, which violates the platform's policy of encrypting all content from beginning to end.

"If you turn it on, it currently functions clumsily for one-to-one messages. We're working on making it simple to use and applicable to group messaging too," said Musk. He continued, "X audio and video calls are automatically encrypted."
In the meantime, several X users raised their concerns over the problem and trolled Musk by sharing memes and opinions.
"Is it just me, or did Elon not grasp Kim's question? Kim was concerned about the government's desire to review the DMs," wrote an X user.
Another user said, "You did not address the root of the issue. Why is X partnering with governments to sift through our private direct messages?”
