iPhone 15 best-selling smartphone 2024: In 2024, Apple’s iPhone 15 took the crown as the best-selling smartphone worldwide, according to Counterpoint Research. Not only did the iPhone 15 hold the top spot, but its Pro Max and Pro versions also ranked second and third, showing Apple’s continued dominance in the market. For the third year in a row, the global smartphone rankings were pretty much a two-horse race between Apple and Samsung.
The iPhone 15’s success was driven by huge demand in major markets like the US and China, which together made up nearly half of its total sales. There was also a noticeable shift towards the Pro models this year, marking a significant milestone—more than half of all iPhones sold were Pro variants. That’s the first time Apple’s ever hit that mark.

Apple’s strategy of offering financing options and trade-in deals made their premium models more accessible, especially in emerging markets. This played a role in Apple making its way into India’s top five smartphone brands for the first time ever by Q4 2024.
Samsung didn’t fall far behind, though. The brand made a strong showing, with four models in the top 10, up from three in 2023. The real win for Samsung was the return of its Galaxy S series to the list for the first time since 2018. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, with its GenAI-powered features like chat assist and live translation, generated a lot of buzz. And on the more budget-friendly side, the Galaxy A15 series outperformed the A14, with particularly strong sales in North America.
One big trend in 2024 was the rise of GenAI-powered smartphones. Five of the top 10 models included AI features like enhanced chat, real-time translations, and more, and it looks like this trend will only grow in 2025.
