Android users are reporting a frustrating issue with the YouTube app this week—video playback speed controls have suddenly stopped working. Whether on phones or tablets, users say they’re no longer able to change playback speeds, with the app automatically resetting videos to the default 1x speed shortly after adjustments are made.
This bug appears to affect both the stable and beta versions of the YouTube app on Android. Viewers who normally rely on faster or slower speeds to tailor their experience are finding the feature unusable. According to reports on Reddit and various online forums, the playback speed change simply doesn’t hold—it reverts within seconds, regardless of what the user selects.

Google has acknowledged the issue. In a statement shared with 9to5Google, the company said:
“We’re aware some of you are experiencing issues adjusting playback speed while watching videos on Android devices. Our teams are actively investigating this issue! We’ll update this thread as soon as we have new information.”
Interestingly, the issue does not affect the YouTube Music app, suggesting that the glitch is isolated to the main YouTube experience on Android. It also doesn’t appear to impact all users, though the exact scope remains unclear.
