JE Technology Desk: YouTube, a popular video streaming platform, is testing a service for playing games online, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The news company cited an email shared with employees at Google.
The tech giant is inviting its workforce to test out a new product called 'Playables,' which falls in the subset of YouTube. According to Reuters, the titles available for playing include Stack Bounce, an arcade game.
Users will be able to play the games from their mobile browsers from the official YouTube website on an Android or iOS running device, WSJ reports. This means no external app is required to play games on a smartphone. According to a spokesperson for YouTube, gaming has been among the key priorities for a long time. While the company is testing new features, it has "nothing to announce right now," the spokesperson said.
YouTube has been a popular choice for gaming creators to stream gameplay and watch gaming content. The current step is part of CEO Neal Mohan's attempt to widen growth horizons as advertising spending continues to decline, the report added.
The company regularly brings new features for creators and users to enhance the in-app experience. YouTube is also testing an AI-powered tool for creators to allow them to translate their videos into different languages. It will create a transcription that creators can review/edit before the dub is generated.
YouTube is "working to make translated audio tracks sound like the creator's voice, with more expression and lip sync," said Amjad Hanif, Vice President of Creator Products of YouTube. While the company is already testing the feature with many creators, it is expected to debut in 2024, according to The Verge.
In another update, the company updated its policies for fan pages to restrict impersonation and plagiarised content, among other things.
