YouTube is implementing new features for Shorts creators that utilise artificial intelligence to enhance productivity through an innovative image-to-video converter and new effects. These changes seek to enhance creativity and accelerate the production workflow for short-form content. The features are powered by Google's Veo 2 video generation model, and will initially be available in select countries before expanding worldwide.

Image-to-Video AI Tool for YouTube Shorts

With the new update, users will be able to find the image-to-video capability, the most notable feature to be released, which permits users to transform selected pictures from their gallery into 6-second videos. After submission, creators will be able to choose from the set of AI-assisted recommendations for animations of the uploaded photo.

  • As an illustration, a regular photo of a landscape can be enhanced to include moving clouds or flowing water.
  • As shown in the YouTube example, a static pedestrian signal can be transformed into a short clip of the walking man emblem dancing and zooming in.

This feature is a variant of the animation capabilities of Google Gemini and the Animate feature in the Edits app by Meta. This is a new approach to animation that can add depth to short videos and make them more interesting.

AI Effects for Creative Transformations

New AI effects capabilities have also been added, permitting users to transform untidy sketches into refined, artistic illustrations.

Change selfies into videos powered by AI with features such as underwater swimming scenes or double selfies from others’ perspectives.

The use of such features is made possible by tapping the “Effects” icon on the Shorts camera and “AI” to browse all generative filters.

Availability and Global Rollout

The features will begin rolling out first in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. YouTube anticipates broadening the scope.

AI Transparency and Watermarks

To ensure transparency, SynthID watermarks and AI-generated labels will be affixed to all YouTube tools content.
