A man from Andhra Pradesh has been arrested for stealing cash from ATMs using techniques he allegedly learned during a cybercrime training course in Hyderabad.

The accused was caught red-handed by Miyapur police under the Cyberabad Commissionerate while attempting to withdraw money illegally from an ATM late Sunday night.

Police said the arrest followed a Dial 100 emergency call, after which a team rushed to the spot and apprehended the suspect.

“Police rushed to the spot immediately after the call and caught the accused red-handed while he was stealing money from an ATM,” said Miyapur ACP Y Srinivas Kumar.

The accused was identified as Vadde Katamaiah, a resident of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, who had come to Hyderabad to undergo training in cybercrime-related courses. During the course, he allegedly learned technical methods used to steal money from ATMs and later applied that knowledge to carry out thefts.

According to police, Katamaiah closely studied the technical features of ATMs operated by certain companies. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) said the accused used to place a technical device inside the ATM to block the cash from dispensing when a customer attempted a withdrawal, and later removed the trapped money.

“When the customer left thinking the transaction had failed, Katamaiah would remove the device and take the cash,” Srinivas Kumar added.

Police further informed that another suspect, Ramanjaneyulu, is currently absconding and teams have been deployed to track him down. Officials are also probing whether the arrested individual has links to similar ATM theft cases in other locations.

In a separate incident, a wedding theft case has surfaced in Bengaluru’s Basavanagudi, where a woman allegedly posed as a relative at ceremonies to steal valuables worth several lakhs. The accused, 46-year-old Revathi of KR Puram, a former guest lecturer, is suspected of committing similar crimes by blending in with wedding guests.

Police have recovered 262 grams of gold and Rs 36 lakh in cash from her. She was arrested on December 1 following a complaint of theft during a wedding on November 23 and is currently in 12-day police custody.
