Hyderabad News: A pregnant woman was allegedly attacked with cement bricks by her husband, who has since been arrested, police reported on Monday. A video of the brutal assault has gone viral, leading to widespread outrage.
The accused, Md Basharath, 32, an interior designer, was seen in the footage waiting beside his motorcycle for his wife, Shabana Parveen, 22. As she approached, he violently pushed her to the ground and struck her head and chest with the bricks approximately 12 to 14 times, leaving her critically injured and unconscious. After the attack, Basharath fled the scene on his bike.

The India today report cited an eyewitness, Chintala Prajwal Reddy as stating that, she saw the attack and attempted to intervene when he noticed Basharath preparing to hit Shabana. In response, the attacker turned on Reddy, trying to assault him as well. Reddy managed to escape and alerted a nearby paan shop owner and attempted to contact the police, but his call did not connect.
Shortly after, staff from SIA Life Hospital arrived at the scene and transported Shabana to the hospital, where she remains unconscious and is receiving treatment.
According to police, Basharath and Shabana first met in a shared auto during a trip to Ajmer Dargah in Rajasthan in January 2023. They fell in love, and Basharath visited her home in Kolkata in May 2023. The couple married in October 2023.
Shabana moved to Hyderabad earlier this year, but the couple soon faced family issues, as stated in a police release. On March 29, she was admitted to a private hospital due to weakness and vomiting, informing the staff about the abuse she had been experiencing.
On the night of April 1, Basharath arrived at the hospital to take Shabana home, but she refused to go with him. This led to a heated argument, resulting in the violent attack outside the hospital. Basharath was arrested on the night of April 2 and was presented before a local court on April 3.
