Hyderabad Mock Drill: Amid ramped-up security architecture and preparedness in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, a mock drill will be conducted in Telangana’s capital Hyderabad on May 7. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the States to conduct a civil defence mock drill. The drill aims to acquaint civilians with their roles and responsibilities as members of society when there is a war-like situation.

Hyderabad Mock Drill Areas

-The drill would be conducted for 30 minutes from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm across Hyderabad within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits. The mock drill will consist 12 Civil Defence services including police, fire, rescue, medical, and municipal departments, as per a The Hindu report.

-Fire Brigade, Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), medical, revenue and local municipal authorities will be involved.

-Sirens will be activated across Hyderabad to simulate the onset of an air raid at 4 pm. The sirens will sound for two minutes to initiate the mock scenario.

-The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) would simulate impact reports of air raids at four different locations in the city at 4:15 pm, as per the report. By 4:20 pm, emergency services will be deployed to these sites.

What Is Mock Drill

A mock drill is a response rehearsal during an emergency that helps people and organisations practice their response in a safe environment. It prepares them to react quickly and effectively during actual emergencies, such as fires, earthquakes, medical crises, or security threats. During the exercise, participants act out as if a real emergency had occurred.

The instruction from the central government came amid an escalated tension with Pakistan after the terror attack on April 22 claimed 26 lives. The order was released to alert the civilians in case of potential cross-border attacks. The announcement is also considered crucial, as such a mock drill was conducted in 1971 (during the war between India and Pakistan).
