A 25-year-old woman from Hyderabad, married to a Chicago-based police officer, has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar seeking urgent intervention in a case of mental harassment and physical assault by her husband.

According to a report by NDTV, the woman, Hana Ahmed Khan, alleges that her husband, Mohammed Zain Uddin, a U.S. national and officer in the Chicago Police Department, confiscated her legal documents and left her stranded in India before returning to the United States.

The couple married on 22 June 2022 in Hyderabad. Khan claims that the alleged abuse began soon after the wedding, when Uddin returned alone to the U.S. and delayed bringing her over for nearly two years. She eventually travelled to the U.S. on 17 February 2024, but says she was subjected to emotional and physical abuse after her arrival.

“Unfortunately, upon my arrival, I was subjected to emotional abuse, physical harassment, and mental torture. Despite these challenges, I remained hopeful that the situation would improve. However, the mistreatment continued,” Khan wrote in a letter to Minister Jaishankar on August 22 2024, according to the NDTV report.

Khan also reported that despite alerting local police following one instance of physical assault, her husband was only let off with a warning. She alleges that he later pressured her into filing for divorce.

During a supposed attempt at reconciliation, Uddin proposed a visit to India and an Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. According to Khan, he later encouraged her to visit her family in Hyderabad. While she was away, she received a call from the hotel management informing her that her husband had checked out and removed all their belongings. Upon returning, Khan says she found her passport, green card, and personal jewellery missing.

Khan has since approached the U.S. consulate in Hyderabad but claims that she has received limited assistance. She has now appealed to the Indian government to help her recover her documents and return to the U.S. to pursue legal proceedings.

Additionally, Khan alleges that her family spent around Rs 20 lakh on the wedding, including gold and gifts that she says were demanded as dowry. “I have been struggling for the last four to five months,” she told reporters, urging the External Affairs Ministry to support her case.
