Hyderabad Drug Bust: A drug bust in Hyderabad has revealed that at least 32 of students from a private medical college were among those consuming drugs. The findings came after Telangana’s Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) arrested two alleged peddlers and uncovered a network supplying ganja (cannabis) to students and others in the city.
The Siasat report cited officials as stating that, the investigation identified 82 consumers in total, including 32 students from Medicity Medical College. Drug tests were conducted on 24 of these students and nine of them, including two girls, were confirmed positive. All those who tested positive were residents of the college hostel.
EAGLE, along with the college administration, held counselling sessions for the students in the presence of their parents. The nine confirmed users were shifted to a de-addiction centre, with officials stating that the next month will be critical for their recovery. Surprise inspections will continue at educational institutions, the agency said.
The case began when EAGLE arrested Arfath Ahmed Khan (23), from Risala Bazar in Bolarum and Zareena Banu (46), from Bidar, Karnataka. Police seized six kilograms of ganja worth around Rs 1.5 lakh. Based on the accused’s statements, investigators identified their customer base, which included medical students.
Khan, a regular ganja user, reportedly turned to peddling to sustain his habit. Between August 2024 and August 2025, he transferred large sums to Zareena’s UPI account to buy ganja for resale in Hyderabad. Khan already faced two NDPS Act cases registered at Tukaramgate and Alwal police stations.
Zareena, police say, has been involved in drug trafficking since 2010 and faces four NDPS Act cases. She allegedly sourced her supply from Parli in Maharashtra and from contacts in Bidar. She had been absconding in one case from Hyderabad and had evaded arrest in another case in Bidar last year.
Investigators also uncovered suspicious financial activity linked to her, including Rs 1.5 crore worth of transactions. Of this, Rs 26 lakh was traced to 51 peddlers in Hyderabad, while Khan alone is believed to have sent her Rs 6 lakh. The remaining Rs 1.24 crore is still under probe, with police suspecting links to around 100 peddlers.
Authorities have warned that more arrests are likely as the network is dismantled.
