A 93-year-old woman earned her PhD in English from Osmania University at varsity’s 83rd Convocation Ceremony in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The elderly woman, Revathi Thangavelu researched topics such as English grammar, alphabet and word formation to successfully get the highest postgraduate achievement.
Revathi Thangavelu retired as a lecturer in 1990 and is now working at Keyes Educational Society in Telangana’s Secunderabad. She was awarded the PhD degree at the Tagore Auditorium which was graced by Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan, who also received an honorary degree from the university.
Revathi Thangavelu was one of the 1,024 PhD graduates who received their degrees at the university’s 83rd convocation, a record number for any university in India in a year. The event also honoured 58 students who won gold medals for their academic excellence, reported TV9.
Revathi Thangavelu’s love for learning and ambition to get a degree have made her an inspiration for many. She worked as a teacher until 1990 and then enrolled in Osmania University for her PhD in English. She completed her PhD successfully and got her degree at the age of 93, which in many ways is an example of self-determination.
