A district consumer forum in Hyderabad has directed India Post to pay Rs 20,000 as compensation to a customer who registered a complaint that his parcel was tampered with and some articles in it were missing.
The complainant, VK Singh, who is an IPS officer had sent four packets containing saris, bed sheets, shirts, pants, medical books and plastic containers to Haridwar via India Post. He alleged that ten saris worth Rs 20,000 were missing when the articles reached the destination and that the packets were intentionally tampered with.
The consumer forum also awarded Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the complaint. It said the postal department officials concerned are accountable for the loss of the articles in the package during transportation.

India Post had claimed that the articles were received and delivered in good condition and that the complainant had not declared the value of the articles or insured the parcel. Meanwhile, the complainant said that video recordings of the packets taken during the dispatch and after arrival at the destination clearly show the difference. He added that such cases have been reported earlier as well.
