A customer was allegedly beaten to death by the restaurant owner and staff over an argument for extra raita (curd) with biryani. The incident took place at Meridian Restaurant in Punjagutta on Sunday after a brawl between customer and restaurant staff.

The altercation began when Liyaqat, a resident of Hashmatabad in Chandrayangutta was having dinner at the restaurant around 11 pm. Liyaqat asked the waiter to serve him extra curd but the waiter ignored his request, leading to an argument. The situation escalated even more when the hotel’s manager and other restaurant staff reportedly attacked Liyaqat.    

The victim and his friend were taken to the police station from the hotel, where they were reportedly beaten up by a sub-inspector again. The victim’s family and friends alleged that the man was not admitted to the hospital by the police, instead, they misbehaved at the time when he was suffering from severe injuries.

The victim’s friend who was with him also alleged that only when Liyaqat’s condition deteriorated even more, he was shifted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

AIMIM leader and MLC Mirza Rahmath Baigh met with senior police officials and demanded justice for the victim’s family. Police have initiated an investigation and registered a case against the hotel staff on the charges of murder.
