Hyderabad AQI Post-Diwali:  As residents of Hyderabad enthusiastically celebrated Deepavali by setting off fireworks and bursting crackers, the city's air quality worsened to dangerous levels on Thursday night, October 31, 2024. As the sky was lit up by aerial pyrotechnics, the Hyderabad Police's 10 PM cracker-bursting curfew was mostly disregarded.

The US Consulate observatory reported a peak of 475 µg/m³ of particulate matter pollution (PM2.5), while Kapra recorded 454 µg/m³ and the partially operational monitoring station in Sanathnagar recorded 472 µg/m³. These levels were disturbing.

Just as the air quality started to deteriorate at approximately 10 PM, five of the Central Pollution Control Board's real-time monitoring stations at Zoo Park, Bollarum, Patancheru, Somajiguda, and Sanathnagar went offline.

In addition, PM10 levels in Ramachandrapuram, which is on the outskirts of the city, skyrocketed to 605 µg/m³. After 10 PM, pollution levels peaked before settling down into normal ranges. The Sanathnagar observatory returned to operation at 1 AM on Friday, November 1, 2024, and recorded a high of 472 µg/m³ PM2.5.
