Telangana:  In a major move, the Telangana government has issued orders allowing employees in commercial establishments (excluding shops) to work up to 10 hours a day with a cap of 48 hours per week. Additionally, if the working hours exceed, the employer will have to pay the employee for overtime. A 30-minute break is mandatory for employees working more than six hours a day.

Know About The Changes In Detail

According to the official order by the Telangana government, the daily working hours should not go beyond 10 hours, and the weekly limit should not exceed 48 hours. Work done by employees beyond the mentioned hours will qualify for overtime wages.

Additionally, employees working for six hours or beyond in a day should be given a break of at least 30 minutes. Their total spread of work and breaks must not exceed 12 hours in a single day.

Employees in commercial establishments (excluding shops) may be allowed to work more than 48 hours in a week with overtime pay, but not more than 144 hours in any quarter. If a company violates the aforementioned conditions of the government, it would result in the revocation of the exemption granted to the concerned company.

The order issued by the Telangana government will come into effect after publication in the Telangana Gazette on July 8.

According to the order issued by the Labour, Employment, Training & Factories Department on July 5, the exemption is made under the Telangana Shops And Establishments Act, 1988 (Act No. 20 of 1988).

This notification allows such establishments to be exempted from Sections 16 and 17 of the Act, which relate to the working hours and rest intervals, subject to special conditions.
