Telangana News: After torrential rainfall in upstream areas, the Kaddam Narayana Reddy Project, one of the oldest irrigation projects in the state, began overflowing on Thursday. The project recorded an inflow of about 3 lakh cusecs of water.

Inflows into the project totaled 2,82,583 lakh cusecs, according to a statement issued by the irrigation department at 8 am. In contrast to the storage capacity of 7.60 TMC, the water level reached 8.234 TMC. Lifting 14 of the 18 gates allows for the flow of 2.36 lakh cusecs of extra water downstream.

According to reports, four imported German gates are broken, which is scaring residents and authorities. These gates were part of a project that is currently overflowing with water. Two gates lack counterweights, while the ropes on the other two gates are broken. Heavy rains delayed the gate repairs that had started a few days before.

Khanapur MLA Rekha Naik and collector K Varun Reddy are keeping an eye on the situation. Varun has already given officials the order to move 7,000 residents of seven villages as soon as possible to relief camps. With the project overflowing, the villages of Devunigudem, Rampur, Munyala, and Godisherala are gripped by panic.

On July 13 last year, the project saw inflow of 509,025 cusecs. Surplus water was discharged downstream by lifting 17 gates. In order to irrigate 68,150 acres of agricultural lands on the northern bank of the Godavari, the dam was built over the Kaddam River, a tributary of the Godavari, in 1949 by the then state government. It was put into service in 1958.
