Telangana News: The Telangana government has allowed an increase in daily work hours at commercial establishments, excluding shops, from eight to ten hours. However, the total number of working hours in a week must not exceed 48. The move aims to provide more flexibility in scheduling without changing the weekly workload cap.
According to The Hindu report, change was notified in a Government Order (G.O.) issued by the Labour, Employment and Factories Department on Saturday, July 5. As per the new rule, any work done beyond 48 hours in a week will be considered overtime, and employees will be eligible for additional wages accordingly.
The G.O. also sets clear guidelines regarding rest periods. No employee can be made to work for more than six hours without a minimum break of 30 minutes. Furthermore, the total working time, including the rest interval, must not stretch beyond 12 hours on any single day.
The revised working hour rules apply only to commercial establishments and not to shops. As per the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, commercial establishments include businesses or organisations involved in trade, banking, insurance and clerical work of industrial units. It also covers cooperative societies and other workplaces declared by the state government as commercial establishments, but excludes retail shops.
Officials clarified that the aim of the updated rule is to accommodate flexible working shifts while maintaining worker rights and safety. Employers must continue to follow regulations on rest intervals and payment for overtime.
The order has come into effect immediately and commercial establishments have been asked to make necessary arrangements in compliance with the new timing structure.
