The richness and diversity of coffee, a cherished beverage enjoyed by people all over the world, is largely due to the various varieties of coffee beans. The four primary varieties of coffee beans are Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa; each has a distinct flavour and texture.
Arabica beans are the most common and extensively consumed type, prized for their smooth, sweet flavour reminiscent of fruit and sugar. Higher altitudes are ideal for them, especially in Latin America, where they are highly valued for their aromatic and rich flavours.
Conversely, Robusta beans are better suited for people who desire a more potent cup of coffee due to their higher caffeine concentration and stronger, harsher flavour. Robusta beans are widely grown in Africa and Indonesia, and because of their resilience, they are also widely preferred.
Liberica beans are rare yet highly prized for their distinct, robust flavour and fragrant, smoky scent. Liberica beans are native to West Africa but are now grown in countries like Malaysia and the Philippines. They provide a unique coffee experience that differs from more common varieties.
Grown throughout Southeast Asia, Excelsa beans are a type of Liberica that are prized for their tangy, fruity flavour, which adds nuance and complexity to coffee blends. Coffee lovers can discover and explore a vast range of flavours and scents because every variety of coffee bean has unique qualities, tastes, and aromas.
