Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut Puja, is celebrated with great devotion across India, a day after Diwali. The festival marks the divine act of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Gokul from the wrath of Lord Indra. This special day symbolises faith, humility, and gratitude towards nature and God’s protection. Devotees worship Lord Krishna and the sacred Govardhan Hill by offering various dishes made of grains, sweets, and vegetables, collectively known as “Annakut” or “mountain of food.”
People decorate temples, sing bhajans, and perform “Govardhan Parikrama” (circumambulation) as a mark of respect. Many also create small hill-like structures made of cow dung or mud to represent Govardhan Hill and offer prayers. The festival brings families and communities together in joy and devotion.
