History of the Teddy Bear: The teddy bear is one of the most popular toys in the world, adored by both adults and children for more than a century. This beloved plush bear has evolved from a simple toy to a representation of affection, nurturing, and happy childhood memories. Teddy bears are given as gifts on Valentine's Day, anniversaries, birthdays, and even as a consoling or friendly gesture during difficult times. However, have you ever pondered how the teddy bear got its start and rose to fame around the world? Its past is just as charming as its look.
The journey of the teddy bear began in the early 1900s and is closely linked to a surprising historical event involving a U.S. president. Over the years, teddy bears have transformed from simple stuffed animals to collectables, designer toys, and even therapeutic companions.
On National Teddy Bear Day, celebrated every year to honour this adorable creation, let’s explore how the teddy bear was invented and how it won the hearts of millions worldwide.

The inspiration for the teddy bear comes from a hunting trip of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902, when he refused to shoot a bear cub. The bear was captured, which made Roosevelt feel it was unfair to shoot. The incident received media coverage, which led to the creation of a political cartoon. A Brooklyn shop owner, Morris Michtom, created a stuffed bear which was called “Teddy’s Bear.” At the same time in Germany, Margarete Steiff also designed a similar toy, and both versions became quite famous.

How Teddy Bears Became Popular
In no time, the teddy bear was the new sensation in the United States and the rest of Europe. Toy stores started making hundreds of the plushies. It was the latest emblem of love and the innocence of childhood. Starting in the 1920s, teddy bears were already being given as presents during special events like birthdays and public holidays. Eventually, other materials, colours and designs were added, which made the bears more desirable.

Early teddy bears were created using real fur and separate button eyes, which were then replaced with plush fabric for safety reasons. Presently, they come in all sizes, ranging from miniature keychain bears to bears the size of an adult. There has been a rise in designer as well as custom teddy bears. Today, there are also talking and animated teddy bears, a result of modern technology.
Teddy Bears as Gifts and Companions
Soft toys are not only playthings; they hold feelings too. Many people use them as a sentimental gift for their partners on Valentine’s Day. Many people use them to provide solace to people who are in distress. They are used in therapy with children as well as with patients who suffer from anxiety. Vintage teddy bears are considered prized possessions in a collection.
National Teddy Bear Day – Celebrating the Icon
Every year on September 9, people in the United States, in particular, celebrate National Teddy Bear Day. It pays tribute to the cultural influence and history of this classic toy. Teddy bears are given as gifts, stories are exchanged, or money is donated to charities on this day.
