He became exceptionally popular for his immense talent, mastering classical music while also experimenting with different genres such as jazz, thereby winning audiences worldwide.

1. Ustad Allah Rakha (1919–2000)

Ustad Allah Rakha is widely regarded as a pioneer of tabla. He popularised tabla on the global stage and collaborated extensively with sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar which led to the introduction of Indian classical music to the West.

Born in Jammu, he began his training with Ustad Kader Baksh of the Punjab gharana. Allah Rakha revolutionised tabla rhythms and mentored some of its most famous artists, including his son, Ustad Zakir Hussain.

2. Ustad Zakir Hussain (1951-2024)

The son of Ustad Allah Rakha, Zakir Hussain is an international icon and the most famous tabla player today. From classical to fusion to jazz, he has collaborated with so many artists across different genres.

Starting tabla lessons as a toddler, Zakir started performing by the age of 7. His collaborations with bands such as Shakti and his work in world music have gained him international recognition and numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

3. Pandit Kishan Maharaj (1923–2008)

Pandit Kishan Maharaj, a Benares gharana maestro, was well-known for his amazing rhythmic command and ability to smoothly incorporate tabla into both solo and accompanied performances.

He was born in Varanasi and trained with his father, Hari Maharaj, before becoming well-known for his powerful and complicated compositions. His duets with other legends, including Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan, are legendary.

4. Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (b. 1954)

5. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri (b. 1947)

Another maestro of the Farrukhabad gharana, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is famous for blending tradition with innovation. His solo tabla performances are regarded as rhythmic masterpieces.

He is a native of Kolkata and had his training under Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas. With his collaborations with East and West musicians, Swapan has attained worldwide fame. Furthermore, he has served as director of the Ali Akbar College of Music in California.

6. Pandit Shankar Ghosh (1935-2016)

7. Pandit Nayan Ghosh (b. 1956)

Born to Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, he learned both instruments extensively. Nayan Ghosh is esteemed for his commitment to upholding the traditions of Indian classical music.

8. Anuradha Pal (b. 1974)

The first internationally acclaimed woman tabla virtuoso, Anuradha Pal is one who has broken many a gender barrier in the realm of Indian classical music. Anuradha is known for her solo performances as well as her fusion projects.
