List of Indian PMs with party Names and Their tenure:  In the Government of India, the Prime Minister serves as the chief executive, according to established constitutional norms. While the President of India holds a ceremonial position as the head of state, the Prime Minister exercises executive authority alongside their chosen Council of Ministers.

The Prime Minister is typically the leader of the political party that holds a majority in the Lok Sabha, the primary legislative body in India. The Prime Minister and their cabinet are accountable to the Lok Sabha, where they must maintain the confidence of its members.

Appointed by the President of India, the Prime Minister's appointment hinges on the support of the majority of Lok Sabha members, who are directly elected every five years. The Prime Minister can be a member of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha. As the head of the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister presides over the Union government's executive functions.
