Best Air Defence Systems In The World:  Air defence systems have utmost importance in modern warfare. They are the key weapon for protecting nations from air threats like enemy planes, drones, and missiles. Nations across the globe are investing heavily in advanced technologies to detect, trace, and intercept threats to national and world security against terror attacks. From Russia's S-400 Triumph to Israel's Iron Dome, the world's leading air defence systems highlight features like powerful radars, rapid-fire missiles, and smart command centres to provide multi-level cover. To keep you updated about world affairs, here’s a list of the 10 best air defence systems in the world, according to data from the World Population Review.

What Is The Air Defence System?

An air defence system is a technology and weapons system that protects a nation from air attacks. These systems use radars to locate and follow enemy aircraft, drones, or missiles. Once a threat has been detected, the system launches surface-to-air missiles or uses fighter aircraft to intercept and destroy it before it harms the country's national security. They are mostly placed to ensure the skies are safe against any enemy objects or attacks.

Which Country Has The Best Missile Defence System In The World?

Russia has the largest number of the world’s best missiles, especially its S-400 Triumph. The S-400 can detect and destroy a range of targets, such as aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles, at ranges of up to 400 km. It uses advanced radars and can engage multiple targets, which makes it highly efficient and sought after by many countries. India also owns a total of five squadrons of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defence missile system, which is famously known as Sudarshan Chakra in the Indian service. Other nations like America and Israel have also developed first-class systems like THAAD and Iron Dome, but the S-400 stands out because it has a long range, high versatility, and features of advanced technology.

  1. S-400 Triumph (Russia)

Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau develops the S-400 Triumph and is regarded as the world's most advanced air defence system. It is equipped with advanced radar, detection, and targeting technology, which is capable of fighting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at ranges of up to 400 km and altitudes of up to 30-56 km. The S-400 is capable of striking multiple targets simultaneously, employing multiple categories of missiles, and countering stealth technology.

  1. David's Sling (Israel)

David's Sling is jointly produced by Israel's Rafael and Raytheon. This air defence can fight medium- to long-range missiles and aircraft. Its Stunner interceptor has high agility, and the system is able to engage threats at 70-300 km out at altitudes of 15 km. David's Sling fills the gap between Israel's Iron Dome and Arrow systems, and is a key layer in Israel's multi-level defence.

  1. S-300VM (Russia)

S-300VM is also known as the Antey-2500. It is a multi-channel, long-range system with the capability of intercepting short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aeroplanes. It is 200 km in range and 30 km in altitude and is employed in national and expeditionary defence activities.

  1. THAAD (USA)

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system is a US air defence that intercepts ballistic missiles during their terminal phase. It has a range of 200 km and can engage targets at altitudes of up to 150 km, with a perfect intercept record in recent tests.

  1. MIM-104 Patriot (USA)

The MIM-104 Patriot is manufactured by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon and is an all-weather, worldwide deployed system. It can engage tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced fighter aircraft at ranges of 160-170 km and altitudes of 24 km. The system is war-tested and upgraded on a regular basis.

  1. HQ-9 (China)

China's HQ-9 is comparable to Russia's S-300, which has the capability to shoot down aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It can travel a distance of 125 km and a height of up to 27 km, has advanced radar systems, and superb guidance systems.

  1. Aster 30 SAMP/T (France/Italy)

Eurosam has produced the Aster 30 SAMP/T, which is a theatre-level defence mobile system. It has a range of 120 km and an altitude of 20 km and can engage high-speed threats like combat aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles. It is used by several European and Asian nations.

  1. MEADS (USA/Germany/Italy)

The Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS) is a road-mobile system with 360-degree coverage. It can destroy targets at 40-70 km range and 20 km altitude by using advanced phased array radar and rapid reload of missiles.

  1. Barak-8 (Israel/India)

Barak-8 is an Israel-India joint venture, provides 360-degree defence against air, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVS. It has a range of 70 km and can attack several targets simultaneously, which is ideal for ground and naval deployment.

  1. Iron Dome (Israel)

Iron Dome is a short-range system designed to intercept mortars, rockets, and artillery. Its range is 70 km, and its rate of interception success is more than 90%. It has an essential role to play in defence of urban and strategic locations.
