Bihar is the largest litchi producer in India, producing approximately 300 thousand metric tons per year. In year 2024, the state produced 322 thousand metric tons litchis. The state is also famous for its Shahi Litchi variety that's known for its sweet taste, juicy pulp and trademark aroma. The state of Bihar contributes significantly to India's litchi exports and domestic consumption, particularly from areas like Muzaffarpur, which is frequently referred to as the litchi capital of India.
2. West Bengal
West Bengal is the second largest producer of litchi, producing around 82.3 thousand metric tons. In West Bengal, the two varieties of litchi that are grown are Bombay and Muzaffarpur (Spring). The provinces of Malda and Nadia are the main litchi-growing belts. Litchi farming in Bengal sustains thousands of farmers and plays a crucial role in the summer fruit economy.
3. Jharkhand
Holding rank 3rd, Jharkhand produced 65.5 thousand metric tons of litchis in the last year 2024. The Shahi Litchi is also grown in Jharkhand province, especially in Deoghar and Ranchi. The state’s favourable climate and farmers’ awareness about the commercial litchi farming have encouraged litchi farming and market presence over the years.

Punjab is also one of the largest litchi producers, as it cultivated almost 64.8 thousand metric tons of litchis in 2024. It produces Dehradun Litchi and Rose Scented varieties. Districts like Pathankot and Hoshiarpur are mainly known for litchi production. With improved irrigation and cool winters, Punjab has entered the northern Indian market for litchis. The state has received its fame and easy access, while litchis remain intensely produced.
5. Assam
Assam, with the production of 61.3 thousand metric tons, is a major litchi producer in the northeast of India. There are varieties like Bombai and Muzaffarpur grown in Assam. With good land and climate, there is potential for rapid growth of litchi farming, especially in districts like Tezpur and Lakhimpur.
6. Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh has grown by 61.1 thousand metric tons of litchis every year. The state grows Shahi and China varieties of litchis, along with help from government schemes and better farming practices, litchi production becomes an income source for the farmers in places in and around Raipur and Bilaspur.

Uttar Pradesh grows about 40 to 42 thousand metric tons of litchis every year. The state grows well-known varieties such as Shahi Litchi and Early Seedless in particular, in western and eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh: Litchi farming contributes positively to the state’s fruit economy, and it supports thousands of growers.
8. Odisha
Odisha produced around 25.5 thousand metric tons of litchis in 2024. The Bombay and Muzaffarpur varieties are mostly grown. Litchi farming is practised in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Cuttack districts. The warm weather and fertile lands lead to good quality and yield.
9. Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand grows approximately 18.7 thousand metric tons of litchis, mainly in Dehradun and Haridwar. This region is known for its Dehradun Litchi, which is famous for its aroma and its sweet taste. Due to the cool climate, the fruit has a particular flavour and allows for export quality.
