State-Wise Diamond Reserves In India: India has a significantly rich history of diamond mining with huge reserves spread across the nation. India's diamond resources are mainly localised in three states -Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Madhya Pradesh is hands down, India's largest diamond-producing state and contributes to more than 90% of India's diamond resources. India's diamond mining hub, the Panna diamond belt is situated in Madhya Pradesh and is the centre point of the Indian diamond mining landscape.

Even though the country of billions has significant diamond reserves, its diamond production remains relatively limited compared to global giants like Russia, Botswana, Canada, and South Africa due to several key reasons including low-grade or small-sized diamonds found in the country and strict government regulations and licensing issues. The environmental conservation concerns and lack of mining technology also add to the problem.

List Of State-wise Diamond Reserves In India:

State Reserves (Carats) Remaining Resources (Carats) Total Resources (Carats)
Madhya Pradesh 847,559 27,749,477 28,597,036
Andhra Pradesh NA 1,822,955 1,822,955
Chhattisgarh NA 1,304,000 1,304,000
Odisha NA Smaller reserves Smaller reserves
Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala NA Smaller reserves Smaller reserves

Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is the biggest diamond-producing state and possesses the maximum proportion of diamond reserves in India. It contributes about 90% of the total diamond resources of the country. MP contains reserves of 847,559 carats and other resources of 27,749,477 carats, totalling 28,597,036 carats. The state is widely known for its Panna diamond belt. Panna is also known as the City of Diamonds because it has been a historic hub for diamond mining.

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh possesses diamond resources of 1,822,955 carats, with a large part in the Anantapur district. Diamond production in the state mainly takes place in the Krishna River gravel.

Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh possesses diamond resources of 1,304,000 carats, with all of these resources in the Raipur district. Though Chhattisgarh makes a notable contribution to Indian diamond production, its production is considerably lesser in size than that of Madhya Pradesh.

Odisha

Odisha is famous for diamond production, especially from the gravel of the Mahanadi River. Initial surveys have revealed promising diamond reserves in regions such as Nuapada district, but these are yet to be economically feasible for mass mining.

Jharkhand

Jharkhand possesses lesser diamond reserves and contributes negligibly to India's overall diamond production. Exploration work has been carried out in some areas of the state, but major commercial mining activities are still absent.

Karnataka

Karnataka possesses fewer diamond reserves, and exploration work has been carried out to discover possible deposits. Nevertheless, the state's diamond output is negligible compared to other states.

Kerala

Kerala's diamond reserves are also negligible and as per rumours, the state might become a profitable site for diamond mining, however, as of now the state does not contribute significantly to India's diamond production and there are no major diamond mining operations in Kerala.
