Top 10 Electricity-Producing States In India

Electricity is an essential aspect of modern development, and India has seen huge progress in power generation over the years. However, with rapid urbanisation at different levels in India, industrial development and the expansion of the sector of renewable energy sources, states are beginning to seriously expand their installed capacity of electricity generation. As expected, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are working to meet the rising household and industrial demand for electricity. Each state has its own natural resources and is working with its own resources and infrastructure, resulting in different levels of installed capacity generating electricity.

For example, some states like Rajasthan and Gujarat have large solar energy potential because of their expansive desert land, while Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are more reliant on coal-based thermal power plants. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka provide a good example of a state being able to strike a balance between renewable and conventional sources of power. Knowing the electricity-producing capacity for the various states also provides clarity about India's energy roadmap and how serious the energy transition will be to a more sustainable system or development in the years ahead.

1. Gujarat – 63,787.97 MW (64 Gigawatt)

Gujarat ranks number 1 because of its substantial commitment to renewable energy, particularly solar and wind... The state has vast tracts of barren land, which makes the establishment of solar parks feasible, and a long coastline that is advantageous for establishing wind projects. Gujarat is also home to thermal power plants and industrial centres that have a strong need for electricity, which makes it the largest provider of power in India.

2. Maharashtra – 54,464.23 MW

Due to its large thermal power plants, hydroelectric projects, and nuclear power plants, Maharashtra takes second place among the states with the most electricity generation. As the financial capital of India, the state has enormous commercial and residential demand for electricity. Additionally, the Tarapur nuclear power plant and many other dams significantly contribute to the state's electricity generation.

3. Rajasthan – 52,597.24 MW

Rajasthan is known as the solar powerhouse of India. The abundant land in desert conditions and high solar radiation make it suitable for solar farms, such as the Bhadla Solar Park, which is one of the largest in the world. Wind energy further adds to its commendable capacity.

4. Tamil Nadu – 43,912.52 MW

Tamil Nadu has a strong combination of renewable and conventional energy. It is a leader in wind energy in India and has multiple thermal and hydro plants. Its focus on clean energy has made it one of the most balanced electricity producers.

5. Uttar Pradesh – 36,977.29 MW

The most populous state in India, Uttar Pradesh, has a tremendous demand for power. The state relies heavily on coal-based thermal power plants, as well as hydro projects on the Ganga and other rivers. Increasing industrialisation has also contributed to an increase in electricity generation.

6. Karnataka – 35,571.26 MW

Karnataka is at the forefront of the renewable energy sector, particularly in solar power, because of the suitable climate and government policies in place. Karnataka also has an abundance of hydropower projects in the Western Ghats. This is what makes it one of the fastest-growing electricity-generating states.

7. Madhya Pradesh – 32,758.19 MW

Madhya Pradesh generates thermal power using its substantial coal resources, but makes contributions through hydropower and solar. The state's central position also makes Madhya Pradesh an important supplier of electricity to northern and western India.

8. Andhra Pradesh – 29,613.85 MW

Andhra Pradesh utilises a mix of energy sources, including coal-based plants, hydropower, and renewable energy sources. The state's coastline is suitable for wind energy projects, and the state is also developing its solar power capacity.
