List Of Cities And States That Have Been Renamed:  Over the years, many Indian cities and states have changed their names. There are many reasons for changing the names of cities and states, however, till yet the name changes reflect a desire to re-establish a connection with the area's historical, cultural or linguistic roots.  Sometimes, renaming is done in remembrance of national leaders, freedom fighters or prominent figures, who contributed to the development of nations. 

For example, cities like Bombay became Mumbai, and Allahabad transformed into Prayagraj, reflecting their historical and cultural identities. In the same way, states have been renamed to reflect the prevailing language or culture of the area, like Orissa changing to Odisha and Calcutta to Kolkata.
