The United States Navy is the world’s most powerful and largest navy in the world, with solid power projection, technological advancement, and overall displacement. With a fleet tonnage of over 4.1 million tons, 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and a worldwide presence, the US Navy has no one near its reach and capability. Its carrier strike groups, advanced submarines, and destroyers help it to operate at the same time across several oceans.
China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is the largest in the world by number of ships, as the PLAN is operating more than 400 vessels, including three working aircraft carriers and a growing fleet of submarines. China dominates pure numbers but is second only to the US in the overall fleet tonnage, underlining an emphasis on smaller, regional-power projection vessels. But PLAN's working hard towards modernisation and rising blue-water capabilities are bridging the qualitative gap between the US.
Russia, Japan, Indonesia, Korea and India complete the top seven, all with considerable regional power. Russia's fleet is smaller in size but has a strong submarine presence and holds a powerful position in the Arctic and the Mediterranean Sea. Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force is known for its sophisticated technology and highly skilled personnel, and plays its significant role in Pacific security.
Where Do the India Navy and the Pakistan Navy Rank?
India strongly stands among the world's top seven navies in terms of displacement and is known for its strategic intentions within the Indian Ocean. Modernisation of the Indian Navy includes nuclear submarines, advanced surface warships, and new aircraft carriers that make it an important naval player in the Indo-Pacific.
Pakistan is not in the list of the global top ten navies, but still, with an able and locally oriented navy, the Pakistan Navy effortlessly takes care of its coast and economic interests, particularly around strategic port Gwadar. With submarines, frigates, patrol ships and continual efforts, the Pakistani armed forces are working hard to become more effective by acquiring new boats and partnering with other superpowers like China.
